What to do when you know you are losing it.

Do you ever find yourself yelling at your kids and regretting it later?  Do you wish that you could do all the suggestions that you have found elsewhere like, count to ten or leave the room and found that the damage is done before you could even think about it? 

While counting to ten and leaving the room are good solutions, for some people it takes a bit more self knowledge to deal with the anger.  Pay attention to your bodily cues that tell you you are about to lose your temper.  Look for early warning signs.  Do you get tense in your shoulders?  Do you get a frown on your face? Do you have the sense that your mood is irritable and anything will touch it off?  Are you feeling overwhelmed?  When you start feeling these early cues, go somewhere to calm yourself.  Those cues will help you to stop and take inventory of yourself before you blow.

Also, sit down and take stock of your feelings.  If you are feeling overwhelmed with everything, are there some things that you can do to alleviate this?  Is there something that is irritating you that you need to take care of so that you are not taking it out on your kids?  Doing these things should help you not only to curb your anger but also deal with source of it.
