Holiday work parties seem a little scarce and/or toned down this year. However, if you are heading to a holiday party – for work or with friends and family – be sure and pick out a festive frock!

Right now the look is short. Everyone from Ann Taylor to Diane von Furstenburg wants us to show off our legs. For those of us who do not have leggy model gams, this can be a bummer. However – there is good news! Black opaque hose is back! No more feeling like we need to go bare-legged. And black opaque hose looks good on everyone!

As far as necklines go, halter style dresses are in, and I am thrilled. A halter style is very becoming to the neckline, no matter what your bust size is. If you don’t love your arms – throw on a cardigan and you are good to go.

Black is always a safe choice, and one that I typically embrace. Especially in a sketchy economy during the holiday season, there is nothing wrong with going “safe.” A little black dress goes a long way vs. a red dress, gold or metallic one. A black dress will serve you well for years to come. By jazzing it up with festive jewelry, a colorful wrap or funky shoes, you can make the staple black dress sing.

Already have a little black dress that you love? Then head right to the accessories department. Have fun with baubles or bright red or metallic shoes. (However, if you go with anything but black shoes, skip the black opaque hose!) You can go with as low-end as Target or as high-end as Tiffany & Co. and have a ball choosing jewelry. The idea is to pick something that sparkles.

Bored with black? Want a dress that is more exciting? Then go for the metallic. I recently covered the red carpet arrivals of the American Music Awards and was amazed at the amount of gold lame worn. Gold is in! Celebrities from Carrie Underwood to Samantha Harris to Kristen Bell wore metallic (and short!) dresses. Metallic dresses are perfect for the holidays. If a dress seems like too much, then go for metallic shoes or a metallic clutch.

No matter what you wear, have a ball!
