When do babies start on a nap schedule?
I just had a baby after 9 years of not having one so as you could guess I've forgotten a lot of stuff! I know both of my older kids were on a nap schedule at some point, but can't remember when or how I did it. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
Posted November 24, 2009 7:04 PMInfants really sleep and eat when they first arrive home and for the most part they do not cry unless they are hungry or wet. They usually eat every 2-4 hours depending upon their weight and whether they are being breast fed or bottle fed.
They usually do not sleep through the night until at least 6 weeks of age. Sleep training is not recommended until around 4 months. You will begin to see some type of schedule appear if you have a routine that you have developed over the first couple of months. Routine is key! Naps schedules begin to appear around the time the baby can go several hours without getting too hungry and is sleeping most of the night. Eventually, around 4 months of age you will want to have a morning nap and an afternoon nap if possible with a couple of hours of awake time in between. Being in tune with your infant's signs of being tired is important so that you can get him ready for his nap and put him down to sleep before he is already crying and overly tired.
For references I would suggest Dr. Marc Weissbluth's "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" book. It is an excellent resource.
I hope this has been helpful!
Posted November 25, 2009 10:50 PMThanks for the response! We're almost on a schedule a week over 4 months old! He takes 3 naps during the day about an hour each and then sleeps 10 -12 hours all night! I think I'm the luckiest mom in the world!!!
